The Mobile Web

Michael Fienen wrote a superb article about Mobile Web Applications within a Higher Education environment. Fienen includes links to some of the top mobile apps available by universities and colleges, such as MIT and West Virgina University. Remember, by 2015, the mobile web will overtake desktop computing. Are you on board with the Mobile Web yet?

iPhone 3.0 Coming this June

Apple just released news of OS 3.0 for the iPhone. The newest iPhone software is due out towards the end of June, but the first build is now available to developers. The highlights of today’s announcements are (in my opinion):

  • Cut/Copy/Paste
  • PUSH
  • MMS (only for iPhone 3G)
  • Spotlight Search feature
  • Landscape Keyboard
  • P2P using Bluetooth

iPhone Canada

iphonecanadaI went to Montreal for the New Year celebration and as I crossed the border, my iPhone switched from AT&T and became Rogers. Full bars, great connection. I later learned from a kiosk in a Montreal shopping centre that Rogers is an International partner of AT&T. The data is set to roam, which I just disabled, using the phone sparingly, with only a few SMS text messages. The reception and reliability were the same if not better than AT&T in the states…

iPhone 3G – What they didn’t tell you…

3G is faster, more reliable, but not available outside of metro areas. If you live in one of the selected areas, by all means go ahead and get the new iPhone, but if you’re among the majority not able to get the faster 3G speed, then stick with the iPhone you have and enjoy the EDGE Network. Oh yeah, the new iPhone is also plastic…

iPhone 2.0 will still be available to current iPhone owners, and the upgraded software is still free, meaning you can take advantage of the applications store and the Exchange support with PUSH email features. Personally, I’ll wait another year, then get the next generation iPhone when my 2 year contract runs out and an even better iPhone arrives.

iPhone
I broke down and bought an iPhone. It’s full of amazing OS X-like features and I can get EMail, Web, Phone, Text, and Music all in one place… including GPS and camera functionality. Was it worth it? Absolutely. I saved a couple bucks to purchase the 8GB device and come June, version 2.0 will be released allowing me to use iChat and Exchange EMail, among other items included in the SDK package from Apple.
I know it can be addicting, but it can also be handy – I will stick to my rule and not whip it out when amongst friends and colleagues, as that would be rude. Right?
