Two Girls for Five Bucks
Last weekend I traveled to New York City to witness an incredible comedic performance by two very talented ladies. The show, Two Girls for Five Bucks, starring Cathleen Carr and Daiva Deupree, is more than sketch comedy… The show also includes digital shorts and live music by The Ten Dollar Heartbreakers. The show’s tag line, “Exposing Themselves so You Don’t Have To,” is definitely part of the act, as various segments touch upon the girls’ lives growing up – from having a “sexy” mom to having a “mom haircut” in high school. The writing is top notch, the stories unfold quickly, and nothing gets over the audience’s head – and that’s a good thing! The show lasts about 80 minutes and I was smiling from the opening whistle to long after the performance ended – The show’s finale both surprised me and brought me to my feet. The simple use of props and music mixed with the girls’ ability to include the audience and their imagination left me speechless and wanting more stories, but that will have to wait… Will there be a sequel down the road? The stage set-up is small, but perfectly crafted with the band sitting off to the left and involved in almost each skit the ladies performed. There was even a cameo in one of the digital shorts by Cathleen’s husband and one of my best friends, “Pay-tar.”
The show runs from March 11 to March 28 at Ars Nova at 511 West 54th Street in New York City (The Colbert Report is located next door). Shows run Wednesday through Saturday at 8pm. Time is running out if you haven’t seen this two girl laugh attack – hurry up – you won’t be disappointed.
