Ending My Reign at The Red Door

photo by Michael WintersI’ve been involved with the local music scene since 1992 when I began at WUNH 91.3 FM in Durham, NH. After DJing and acting as the radio station’s music director in 1996-97 I began working at BullMoose Music upon it’s grand opening and became the location’s indie music buyer. After 3+ years in retail, I decided to finish school and work in the world of computing and Information Technology, but never giving up my interest or involvement with music.  After the turn of the century I started a music promotions business, in which I represented Important Records, Broken Sparrow Records, and Aesthetics Records. I also released two Justin Carloni albums under the Sadheel Records label. I later volunteered at WSCA (Portsmouth Community Radio) as Music Director, where I met some great people, expanded the music library, and was nominated for the 2005 CMJ Music Director of the Year.  After a few years volunteering and doing weekly radio programs, I decided to exit WSCA and try my hand at booking acts for the Hush Hush Sweet Harlot music series at The Red Door. Laurel Brauns had worked her magic the previous two years, but was soon moving to Oregon, which gave me the opportunity to book live music beginning in January 2006.  This whole story finally leads us to the following news…

I am resigning my duties effective April 1, 2010 at The Red Door and handing over the Hush Hush Sweet Harlot music series to Mr. Tristan Law. (more…)

Portsmouth Tweet Up

twitter-tweetTweet Up  (n.)  A real world meeting between two or more people who know each other through the online Twitter service.

I’m looking forward to Thursday night’s Portsmouth Tweet-up.  At least 70 people will be joining us at 7pm inside The Red Door on State Street in Portsmouth, NH. It’s the first Tweet Up I have organized – I cannot wait to meet everyone.  I’m actually damn excited about this event and hope it leads to more Tweet-ups or Twestivals in the future.  I’ve also been asked, “What can one expect at a Tweet Up?”

Besides a lot of fun – we’ll have a few drinks, discuss technology, social media, listen to some hip new music, network with some amazing local and regional professionals working across a variety of industries, including Education and the Hi-Tech sector.  You never know who you’re going to meet and what new opportunities might come your way!

The prtsmth tweet-up event is also sponsored by a handful of outstanding local businesses… Thanks to River Run Bookstore, Papa Wheelie’s Bikes, Black Sheep Design Company, NH Adobe Users Group, BoucherMEDIA, Gateway Productions, and The Red Door for supplying us with a venue and some great prizes to giveaway, including T-Shirts and an iPod. More to come post-Tweet up!

PRTSMTH TWEETUP coming in April

prtsmthtweetup3The first of hopefully many Seacoast New Hampshire Tweet-Ups will take place on Thursday, April 16th at 7pm. The location is The Red Door and our event sponsors are RiverRun Books, Black Sheep Design Company, Papa Wheelie’s Bike Shop, and BoucherMEDIA.com. RiverRun will be donating a Git Certificate to raffle off and I’m sure we’ll have many other items by the time the event rolls around!  The Red Door will have a special Tweet-Up drink and music will be spun by David Gallant.  Would you like to sponsor the event? Contact Jay.  We hope to see you there…

WUNH Soiree

WUNH Soiree(Portsmouth, NH) – Various members of WUNH, both past and present, gathered upstairs at The Press Room on Friday evening for a jaunt down memory lane. Led by Press Room manager Bruce ‘Blitz’ Pingree, the group solicited each other’s opinions on gray hair, baldness, and children, rather than that of the new Merzbow or Will Oldham records. Those that were present had a great time and besides drinks and appetizers, we all filled up on memories of years gone by, making each other laugh, cry, and plan for another get-together, this time in the Boston area. Good times…

Kate the Great

Kate the GreatLast night I had the opportunity to try “Kate the Great,” a dark, Russian Imperial Stout created by The Portsmouth Brewery in downtown Portsmouth, NH.  Many people around the world have been overwhelmingly excited about this new batch of beer all week…

The beer is over 9% alcohol by volume and is served in a tulip-type glass. It has a strong malt flavor with hints of molasses and  caramel. It went down smooth and had a great taste, not overly hoppy. I could have had three more, but due to alcohol content it was best to leave it at only 1 serving. Beer Advocate named it one of the best beers in the world and labeled it, World Class. The brewery bottled about 800 large bottles and sold out within 2 hours. Now, the beer is available on tap only, but it’s a very limited engagement.
